The Colony Outlands

The Colony Outlands are Uji’s oldest settled territories, established by Korainians who fled the Mother Isles following a series of natural disasters. Each of the three colonies retained the name and environmental character of its ancestral isle.

To the west, the Whitescale settlement of Mountu stretches across a lush coastal landscape of dense greenery, winding waterways and cultivated settlements.

In the middle, the Blackscale territory of Volcanis surrounds a dormant volcano and its surrounding mountain range, where communities are built among steep ridges, dark rock and fertile volcanic ground, and where much of the region’s marble and granite is quarried from the dormant volcano and surrounding peaks.

To the east, the Redscale colony of Sandya rises from clay walled city, its tightly gathered earthen settlements overlooking sandy shores and the surrounding sea.

Although these territories predate The Mainland, many Colony tribes resisted later attempts to absorb them through The Government’s Waves of Confirmation. Their descendants continue to live under tribal systems that preserve ancestral languages, body-marking traditions, family practices and local forms of leadership. Tribes closest to the Border Marshes tend to depend more heavily on The Mainland for formal trade, medical supplies and assistance with birthing. Those living along the outer shoreline are generally more self-sufficient and may have little direct contact with Government institutions.

To Mainlanders, the Colony Outlands are often portrayed as remote and underdeveloped. To Colony settlers, they represent independence and a way of life that existed before The Mainland Government. While the three colonies share a history of displacement and resistance, Mountu, Volcanis and Sandya remain culturally and environmentally distinct territories, each preserving a different part of the world their ancestors were forced to leave behind.
